Growing up in a physically and emotionally abusive environment was like living in a dystopia. To endure and break free from the dehumanization of my surroundings, I had to take control of my narrative. Yet escape was only the first step; leaving the confines of the dictatorship must be followed by embracing what I am outside of it. This process of self-discovery is difficult, ongoing, and tedious – but hopefully worth it.
Black Moon Lilith explores the solace we find in the embrace of our deepest desires and aspirations.
Black Moon Lilith, a fictitious astrological body, embodies the shadow self of Jungian psychology. It encompasses everything that one has denied in oneself and cast into oblivion but notices in others, everything that the ego has refused to associate with itself – sexuality, aggression, instinct, cowardice, passion – all of which are crucial to evolve from mere Persona to Self.
Striking a dystopian tone, the collection traces the steps of a post-apocalyptic survivor through a deserted, lifeless landscape. As they seek sanctuary, rebirth, and purpose, the only reminder of their formerly lavish lifestyle is their sumptuous wardrobe, which features recurring themes of draped skeletal sandlike pleats, creative silhouette proportions, and soft bondage influences that convey the journey to embracing the self. Muted white and off-white muslins transform into gunmetal and slate grays, punctuated by notes of acidic chartreuse and mint, as the survivors embrace their shadows and emerge from socially prescribed innocence into the full complexity of the Self. Our pilgrim’s double odyssey culminates in a decadent festival in the desert under the rising dark luminary, Black Moon Lilith. The collection speaks with urgency to the need for personal and societal transformation. It is one first hurrah at the beginning of a new world.
